The Many Views on Death

Socrates once wrote, “Death may be the greatest of all human blessings.” This idea is true in many ways depending on the point of view of a person. People who hate life would support this idea, while others believe that living is a precious thing and should be sacred.

If someone is so miserable in their life and no longer want to have to deal with it and their surroundings then they would agree in saying that death is the best thing that can happen to someone. In order to think this way you have to be so tired of living completely. It is not healthy for someone to think this way because it may result in them hurting themselves. Wanting to escape the horrors in life could be another reason why people think that death is the greatest thing possible. Thinking that life isn’t worth living isn’t the only reason. Many people want to get away from people or things that are hurting them and feel that death is the only way to get away from it all. Death is the only way to get peace in their life.

Death is the final chapter in life and everyone has to go through it eventually. Sometimes it happens far too soon then it needs to be, and sometimes it doesn’t. Everyone hopes to live as long as possible in order to experience everything that life has to offer. The older that people get the closer they are to death but the longer that they live the more they experience. The opportunity to experience a surplus of things makes the idea of death easier to deal with. Though, when death comes too soon, I believe that it is the worst blessing that can occur. It is not right for it to come prematurely. Having it come early deprives them the chance to grow more as a person and learn more than they already did. Once death arrives there is no turning back and end everything that someone has worked hard to accomplish. This is where I find the fault in what Socrates wrote. Sure death can be a blessing for some, but a majority of people don’t agree with him. People want to live as long as possible and avoid death if they can. A lot of humans, including me, think the complete opposite of how Socrates viewed what death meant and was.

  1. This quote is loaded with so much debate and uprising opinions that it draws and entraps me even more. I agree that to many the idea of death is the end of all suffrage, pain ,tribulations , the end of all existence and etc.. but the logic of wishing and encouraging it is uncalled for. No one wants death knocking at their love ones door unexpected especially prematurely like you said “is the worst blessing” of all. And I agree they’ll come a time when death will come but until then my eyes are set and focus on the beginning and middle of my journey and …..the end will eventually come…maybe when that day does arrive that’s when I’ll truly understand what Socrates meant.

  2. At first when you told me your post is about death I was a little skeptical, until I read it! :)I got really interested in the post and it got me to thinking a lot about it.(Not pertaining to me dying anytime soon... knock on wood) I really liked how you put it in the "viewpoint" of the person dying and why they're okay with death. I know for some people they're going through so much pain and suffering in their lives they just dont think life is as precious as others. Good response to the quote and I can't wait to read more!!! :)

  3. Nice! I really liked your essay. Honestly, at first I agreed with Socrates, I mean if someone is sick or suffering and the only way to get peace is death, then let it be. But as I kept reading your essay I started to change my point of view. It isn’t a blessing it’s a tragedy. Especially to those who didn’t have the opportunity to live a long and happy life. I liked your essay because I can hear your voice and I also liked the flow of your essay. :]

  4. I enjoy your opinion on Socrates' idea that death is a blessing. For some death is an end to suffering and to others it is a blessing because they can accept that they're time on earth is over and their actions are complete. Now, don't be offended, but I disagree with your last statement. Sure, the death of someone who seems far too young or someone in the midst of a great change can be negative, but I personally think that events such as those tend to unintentionally have a positive affect on another person's life, allowing them to grow stronger. At times, events such as those can even have a positive affect on a multitude of people like the death of Martin Luther King Jr. for example. Although it was sad, people teamed together to finish what he had started. Overall, though, I think you did a great job:)
