What Truly is Beautiful?

Confucius once wrote, “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” This quote is not that difficult to understand. No matter how something or someone looks on the outside, they are beautiful in some shape or form. It may not always be on the exterior of the object or person, but somewhere deep inside of them.

I think this quote is very inspirational to many people, particularly those who aren’t exactly satisfied with their physical appearance. Now a day, society is so quick to judge someone solely on their physical appearance. If they do not fit into their expectations they are seen as inferior. This quick judgment does not allow one to show just how great they truly are. Sure they may not be the best looking person but they may have the most wonderful personality than even those who are considered beautiful and no would ever know because they are not given the chance to show it.

For this reason many are not able to see the beauty in everything. A good example of this is how many creatures are treated. When someone sees a spider crawling around most people automatically see it as ugly or scary and decide to kill it. What they do not think about at the time is that, sure they are not exactly something you want to cuddle up with, but they are on the Earth for some reason and that reason is what makes them beautiful. Every creature whether beautiful or not has a job that benefits the whole world and makes it a better and more beautiful place.

Another way of thinking of the idea about beauty is that everything no matter what it is, is beautiful in their own unique way. There are no set rules to what is beautiful and what is not. No one has the right to decide this because beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. What one person thinks is beautiful, someone else might think is completely ugly. That is what makes the idea so much more interesting. Everyone is allowed to have their opinion on what is beautiful and do not have to settle for someone else’s idea and just continue to add on to it because not everyone agrees completely on a certain subject. If this is what Confucius meant when he first wrote this then I completely agree with his interesting thoughts on the idea of beauty.

  1. I take pleasure in you reflection of Confucius’s quote because it is explicit and insightful. Your depiction of what beauty truly is creates a view that is open-minded. I enjoyed the example of the spider; it reflects your intricate and worthy ideology that all life is sacred and beautiful. The simple quote by Confucius is expanded and developed into an outstanding piece that explains that beauty can be found in all people, animals, insects, etc. After reading your piece I can appreciate this idea that all things are unique and special in their own way. Even though some things are different we can learn to empathize with them, that they were meant to be in our world.

  2. Mariana your intake on Confucius’s quote is very genuine and relatable. I agree that everything in this world has beauty but due to society depiction of beauty we drawn away from seeing the true uniqueness that lies within. And not necessarily humans but even insects, animals, and etc all have their beautiful marking, uniqueness, purpose and your remarkable example of the spider proves this. And your right beauty is not a one opinion topic, there are no limits of what is beautiful and your interpretation of this quote has made me appreciate the simple things.

  3. I absolutely agree with your post. It’s true that in our society people are scrutinized for how they look if they don’t fit a certain image then they are looked down upon. It is really sad because as you said everyone is beautiful in different ways but not everyone sees it.

  4. i completely agree with what people say to live life to the fullest. We never really know when our time to go is near so we should do what we enjoy everyday and have no regrets. We should never be mad all the time but be happy.

  5. A remarkable and inspiring blog. I love how you gave multiple explanation about beauty. The most memorable one was the one about the spider. You are definitely right about everyone in this world having a specific thing to do.
